* Rare Earth Element Developing Stage (1958-1970)
Rare earth ore decomposition, chemical separation, ion-exchanged separation, solvent-extracted separation, chlorination and molten salt electrolysis, preparation of individual rare earth metals and alloys, and related basic theories were comprehensively studied. 16 individual rare earth oxides and individual rare earth metals were successfully produced, and the complete technical reports were prepared in details. Historic contributions to the foundation of the rare earth industry in China had been made, and many national prizes were obtained.

*Industrialization Stage of the Rare Earth Techniques (1971-1990)
The integrated applications of the rare earth resources in Baotou were mainly investigated. The first-, second- and third-generation methods of sulphatizing calcination for producing rare earth chlorides from Baotou rare earth concentrates had been invented. The separation techniques for individual rare earth and those for the Southern ionized rare earth ores were successfully developed. These complete techniques had been transferred to Gansu Rare Earth Company, Baotou Rare Earth Metallurgical Plant, 202 Plant, Nongnan Rare Earth Plant, Jiangxi 806 Plant etc. First in China, SmCo permanent magnets, trichromatic phosphors and rare earth polish powders were successfully developed, and the commercial productions were fulfilled in enterprises such as the Shanghai Yuelou Chemical Plant etc. The precedent of the research of rare earth for agricultural use in China was initiated, series of advanced techniques were developed, and distinct benefits were achieved from the spread of the patented techniques and the Changle products through the united organization of several enterprises. Lots of RE specialists were sent to many places for supporting the establishment of the RE research bases such as Baotou RE Institute, Guangzhou Research Institute for Nonferrous Metals etc. Great contributions had been made to the development of the RE industry in China, and the National Advanced Group for the Spread of the RE Application was awarded to our Institute.

* Industrialization Stage of the Advanced RE Function Materials (1991-)

CREM has courageously been taking up the historic mission to transfer the primary products to those with high additive values. CREM has made great efforts to develop advanced RE materials, and to improve the progress of the RE applications. Five production lines has already been built up: RE metals and alloys, RE magnetic aterials, RE luminescent materials, RE fine chemical materials and RE materials for agriculture development. PDP-used phosphors, giant magneto-strictive materials, magneto-optical materials, catalytic and environmental materials, long afterglow materials, biological materials and other advanced RE function materials are being developed. Through technical innovation, system innovation and management innovation, and with the help of the social resources such as the capital market etc, jumping development is hoped to be fulfilled, and the hi-tech enterprise with quite international influence is hoped to be established.
