CREM is
one of the oldest institutes in the research on
rare earth luminescent materials in China. In 1970, it began
the research on phosphors for color TV, and in 1977,
the research on tricolor phosphors for lamp. A lot
of projects have been successfully accomplished:
the red phosphor for color TV, the white phosphor
for projection TV and the preparation of new additive
luminescent materials for electric light sources
won the award of theNational Science Conference
of China, the oxysulfide red phosphor for color
TV was considered as one of the standard phosphors
of China. And about 20 kinds
of rare earth luminescent materials, such as photo-copying
phosphor, ultraviolet phosphor, flying spot scanning
phosphor, x-ray intensifying screen phosphor, |

plant growing
phosphor and metal halide luminescent materials etc.,
won awards from the Ministries or Provinces of China.
With the support of the Committee of National Science
and Technology, the only pilot lab for luminescent materials
in China was set up at GRINM in 1985. The pilot lab has
an area of 410 m2 and some advanced instruments, such
as SPEX Fluorolog-212 spectrofluorometer. It can produce
more than 10 kinds of rare earth luminescent materials. It is
also a base of engineering research for rare earth luminescent
materials, and the engineering technology obtained from
the base was transferred to companies or factories many
times. For example, from 1989 to 1992, the technology
of rare earth tricolor phosphors for lamp had been transferred
to Shenzhen Qirong Minmetals Development Co. LTD., which
has achieved good economic and social results.
In 1995, GRINM was entrusted with carrying out the science
and technology development project-Building up the National
Engineering Research Center for Rare Earth materials with
the loan of $ 3 million from the World Bank. The pilot
lab for rare earth luminescent materials had purchased many equipment
and instruments such as high performance tunnel furnaces,
Jobin Yvon/SPEX-FluoroMax II spectrofluorometer, Coulter
Multisizer 2, PDP-II vacuum ultraviolet spectroradiometer,
SPR-920C spectroradiometer and so on. This has not only
enlarged the capacity of the pilot lab, coming up to 60
tons per year, but also strengthened the engineering research
ability. Now the research projects, which mainly come
from the Ministry of Science and Technology etc., are:
(1) Phosphors for PDP
(2) Multi-color long lifetime phosphorescent materials
(3) Phosphors for white color LED
(4) Phosphors for FED
(5) Spherical phosphors
(6) Nanophosphors
(7) Agriculture-used phosphors
(8) High performance rare earth halide luminescent materials
(9) rare earth halide luminescent materials for automobile lamp
(10) Metal halide luminescent materials for low power ceramic
lamp
(11) Metal halide luminescent materials for UV lamp
(12) Halide luminescent materials for projection lamp
